Social work education was first initiated at the University of Minnesota in 1917 via the Training Course for Social and Civic Work program within the department of sociology. The program consisted of five years of course work, resulting in a Master's degree, with the first awarded to Mary Agnes Meier in 1918. Helen J. Yesner was born on September 9, 1911. She earned her B.S. in 1933 and M.S.W. in 1951 from the University of Minnesota. In 1947 she joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota's school of social work. Helen Yesner died in 2001. From the guide to the Helen J.
